ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥

He alone understands, whom the Lord Himself inspires to understand.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੧॥

|
By Guru's Grace, one serves Him. ||1||
|
|
ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨਿ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
|
giaan rathan sabh sojhee hoe ||
|
With the jewel of spiritual wisdom, total understanding is obtained.
|

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

gur parasaadh agiaan binaasai anadhin jaagai vaekhai sach soe ||1|| rehaao ||
|
By Guru's Grace, ignorance is dispelled; one then remains wakeful, night and day, and beholds the True Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
|
mohu gumaan gur sabadh jalaaeae ||
|
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, attachment and pride are burnt away.
|
|
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
|
poorae gur thae sojhee paaeae ||
|
From the Perfect Guru, true understanding is obtained.
|
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
|
anthar mehal gur sabadh pashhaanai ||
|
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, one realizes the Lord's Presence within.
|
|
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ॥੨॥
|
aavan jaan rehai thhir naam samaanae ||2||
|
Then, one's coming and going cease, and one becomes stable, absorbed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||
|
|
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
|
janman maranaa hai sansaar ||
|
The world is tied to birth and death.
|
|
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥
|
manamukh achaeth maaeiaa mohu gubaar ||
|
The unconscious, self-willed manmukh is enveloped in the darkness of Maya and emotional attachment.
|
|
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਬਹੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
|
par nindhaa bahu koorr kamaavai ||
|
He slanders others, and practices utter falsehood.
|
|
ਵਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
|
visattaa kaa keerraa visattaa maahi samaavai ||3||
|
He is a maggot in manure, and into manure he is absorbed. ||3||
|
|
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
|
sathasangath mil sabh sojhee paaeae ||
|
Joining the True Congregation, the Sat Sangat, total understanding is obtained.
|
|
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥
|
gur kaa sabadh har bhagath dhrirraaeae ||
|
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, devotional love for the Lord is implanted.
|
|
ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
|
bhaanaa mannae sadhaa sukh hoe ||
|
One who surrenders to the Lord's Will is peaceful forever.
|
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੪੯॥
|

|
O Nanak, he is absorbed into the True Lord. ||4||10||49||

One who dies in the Word of the Shabad, finds eternal bliss.
|
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥
|
sathigur bhaettae gur gobindh ||
|
He is united with the True Guru, the Guru, the Lord God.
|
|
ਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
|
naa fir marai n aavai jaae ||
|
He does not die any more, and he does not come or go.
|
|
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
|
poorae gur thae saach samaae ||1||
|
Through the Perfect Guru, he merges with the True Lord. ||1||

ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਲੇਖੁ ॥

jinh ko naam likhiaa dhhur laekh ||
|
One who has the Naam, the Name of the Lord, written in his pre-ordained destiny,
|
|
ਤੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

thae anadhin naam sadhaa dhhiaavehi gur poorae thae bhagath visaekh ||1|| rehaao ||
|
night and day, meditates forever on the Naam; he obtains the wondrous blessing of devotional love from the Perfect Guru. ||1||Pause||

ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
|
jinh ko har prabh leae milaae ||
|
Those, whom the Lord God has blended with Himself
|
|
ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੀ ਗਹਣ ਗਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
|
thinh kee gehan gath kehee n jaae ||
|
their sublime state cannot be described.
|
|
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦਿਤੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
|
poorai sathigur dhithee vaddiaaee ||
|
The Perfect True Guru has given the Glorious Greatness,
|
|
ਊਤਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੨॥
|
ootham padhavee har naam samaaee ||2||
|
of the most exalted order, and I am absorbed into the Lord's Name. ||2||
|
|
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥
|
jo kishh karae s aapae aap ||
|
Whatever the Lord does, He does all by Himself.
|
|
ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥
|
eaek gharree mehi thhaap outhhaap ||
|
In an instant, He establishes, and disestablishes.
|
|
ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਣਾ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥ਜੇ ਸਉ ਘਾਲੇ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
|
kehi kehi kehanaa aakh sunaaeae || jae so ghaalae thhaae n paaeae ||3||
|
By merely speaking, talking, shouting and preaching about the Lord, even hundreds of times, the mortal is not approved. ||3||
|
|
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੈ ਪੋਤੈ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
|
jinh kai pothai punn thinhaa guroo milaaeae ||
|
The Guru meets with those, who take virtue as their treasure;
|
|
ਸਚੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
|
sach baanee gur sabadh sunaaeae ||
|
they listen to the True Word of the Guru's Bani, the Shabad.
|
|
ਜਹਾਂ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਹਾਂ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਏ ॥
|
jehaan sabadh vasai thehaan dhukh jaaeae ||
|
Pain departs, from that place where the Shabad abides.
|
|
ਗਿਆਨਿ ਰਤਨਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੪॥
|
giaan rathan saachai sehaj samaaeae ||4||
|
By the jewel of spiritual wisdom, one is easily absorbed into the True Lord. ||4||
|
|
ਨਾਵੈ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
|
naavai jaevadd hor dhhan naahee koe ||
|
No other wealth is as great as the Naam.
|
|
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
|
jis no bakhasae saachaa soe ||
|
It is bestowed only by the True Lord.
|
|
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
|
poorai sabadh mann vasaaeae ||
|
Through the Perfect Word of the Shabad, it abides in the mind.
|
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੫॥੧੧॥੫੦॥
|
naanak naam rathae sukh paaeae ||5||11||50||
|
O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, peace is obtained. ||5||11||50||

One may dance and play numerous instruments;
|

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਬੋਲਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
|
eihu man andhhaa bolaa hai kis aakh sunaaeae ||
|
but this mind is blind and deaf, so for whose benefit is this speaking and preaching?
|
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਅਨਲ ਵਾਉ ॥
|
anthar lobh bharam anal vaao ||
|
Deep within is the fire of greed, and the dust-storm of doubt.
|
|
ਦੀਵਾ ਬਲੈ ਨ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
|
dheevaa balai n sojhee paae ||1||
|
The lamp of knowledge is not burning, and understanding is not obtained. ||1||
|
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
|
guramukh bhagath ghatt chaanan hoe ||
|
The Gurmukh has the light of devotional worship within his heart.
|
|
ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
|
aap pashhaan milai prabh soe ||1|| rehaao ||
|
Understanding his own self, he meets God. ||1||Pause||
|
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥
|
guramukh nirath har laagai bhaao ||
|
The Gurmukh's dance is to embrace love for the Lord;
|
|
ਪੂਰੇ ਤਾਲ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
|
poorae thaal vichahu aap gavaae ||
|
to the beat of the drum, he sheds his ego from within.
|
|
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
|
maeraa prabh saachaa aapae jaan ||
|
My God is True; He Himself is the Knower of all.
|
|
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

gur kai sabadh anthar breham pashhaan ||2||
|
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, recognize the Creator Lord within yourself. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

guramukh bhagath anthar preeth piaar ||
|
The Gurmukh is filled with devotional love for the Beloved Lord.
|
|
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
|
gur kaa sabadh sehaj veechaar ||
|
He intuitively reflects upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
|
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
|
guramukh bhagath jugath sach soe ||
|
For the Gurmukh, loving devotional worship is the way to the True Lord.
|
|
ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
|
paakhandd bhagath nirath dhukh hoe ||3||
|
But the dances and the worship of the hypocrites bring only pain. ||3||
|
|
