Both the armies faced each other and the drums, conches and trumpets sounded.

ਰਾਕਸ ਆਏ ਰੋਹਲੇ ਤਰਵਾਰੀ ਬਖਤਰ ਸਜੇ ॥

Raakasa Aaee Rohale Tarvaaree Bakhtar Saje ॥

The demons came in great rage, decorated with swords and armour.

ਜੁਟੇ ਸਉਹੇ ਜੁਧ ਨੋ ਇਕ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਭਜੇ ॥

Jutte Sauhe Judha No Eika Jaati Na Jaanni Bhaje ॥

The warriors were facing the war-front and none of them knows to retrace his steps.

Seeing the intense glory of Chandi, the trumpets souded in the battlefield.

ਧਾਏ ਰਾਕਸ ਰੋਹਲੇ ਚਉਗਿਰਦੇ ਭਾਰੇ ॥

Dhaaee Raakasa Rohale Chaugride Bhaare ॥

The highly furious demons ran on all four sides.

ਹਥੀ ਤੇਗਾ ਪਕੜਿ ਕੈ ਰਣਿ ਭਿੜੇ ਕਰਾਰੇ ॥

Hathee Tegaa Pakarhi Kai Rani Bhirhe Karaare ॥

Holding their swords in their hands they fought very bravely in the battlefield.

ਕਦੇ ਨ ਨਠੈ ਜੁਧ ਤੇ ਜੋਧੇ ਜੁਝਾਰੇ ॥

Kade Na Natthai Judha Te Jodhe Jujhaare ॥

And gave a blow to the demon Mahisha who was rubbing his belly.

Gurde Aanadaa Khaaeee Naala Rukarhe ॥

(The sword) pierced the kindneys, intestines and the ribs.

ਜੇਹੀ ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਆਈ ਕਹੀ ਸੁਣਾਇ ਕੈ ॥

Jehee Dila Vicha Aaeee Kahee Sunaaei Kai ॥

Dhoohi Laeeeaa Tarvaaree Devaa Daanvaa ॥

The gods and demons have drawn their swords.

ਵਾਹਨਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰੀ ਸੂਰੇ ਸੰਘਰੇ ॥

Vaahani Vaaro Vaaree Soore Saanghare ॥

And strike them again and again killing warriors.

ਵਗੈ ਰਤੁ ਝੁਲਾਰੀ ਜਿਉ ਗੇਰੂ ਬਾਬੁਤ੍ਰਾ ॥

Vagai Ratu Jhulaaree Jiau Geroo Baabutaraa ॥

The blood flows like waterfall in the same manner as the red ochre colour is washed off from clothes.

A hundred thousand trumpets resound facing one another.

ਰਾਕਸ ਰਣਹੁੰ ਨ ਭਜਨਿ ਰੋਹੇ ਰੋਹਲੇ ॥

Raakasa Ranhuaan Na Bhajani Rohe Rohale ॥

The highly infuriated demons do not flee from the battlefield.

ਸੀਹਾ ਵਾਗੂੰ ਗਜਣ ਸਭੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ॥

Seehaa Vaagooaan Gajan Sabhe Soorame ॥

All the warriors roar like lions.

ਤਣਿ ਤਣਿ ਕੈਬਰ ਛਡਨਿ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ ॥੧੨॥

Tani Tani Kaibar Chhadani Durgaa Saamhane ॥12॥

They stretch their bows and shoot the arrows in front it Durga.12.

The dual chained trumpets sounded in the battlefield.

ਧੂੜਿ ਲਪੇਟੇ ਧੂਹਰੇ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਟਾਲੇ ॥

Dhoorhi Lapette Dhoohare Sardaara Jattaale ॥

The demon chieftains having matted locks are enveloped in dust.

ਉੱਖਲੀਆ ਨਾਸਾ ਜਿਨਾ ਮੂੰਹਿ ਜਾਪਨ ਆਲੇ ॥

Auo`khleeaa Naasaa Jinaa Mooaanhi Jaapan Aale ॥

Their nostrils are like mortars and the mouths seem like niches.

ਧਾਏ ਦੇਵੀ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ ਬੀਰ ਮੁਛਲੀਆਲੇ ॥

Dhaaee Devee Saamhane Beera Muchhaleeaale ॥

The brave fighters bearing long moustaches ran in front of the goddess.

ਸੁਰਪਤਿ ਜੇਹੇ ਲੜਿ ਹਟੇ ਬੀਰ ਟਲੇ ਨ ਟਾਲੇ ॥

Surpati Jehe Larhi Hatte Beera Ttale Na Ttaale ॥

The warriors like the king of gods (Indra) had become tired of fighting, but the brave fighters could not be averted from their stand.

ਗਜੇ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਘੇਰਿ ਕੈ ਜਣੁ ਘਣੀਅਰੁ ਕਾਲੇ ॥੧੩॥

Gaje Durgaa Gheri Kai Janu Ghaneearu Kaale ॥13॥

They roared. On besieging Durga, like dark clouds.13.

ਚੋਟ ਪਈ ਖਰਚਾਮੀ ਦਲਾ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ॥

Chotta Paeee Khrachaamee Dalaa Mukaabalaa ॥

The drum, wrapped in donkey’s hide, was beaten and the armies attacked each other.

ਘੇਰਿ ਲਈ ਵਰਿਆਮੀ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥

Gheri Laeee Variaamee Durgaa Aaei Kai ॥

The brave demon-warriors besieged Durga.

ਰਾਖਸ ਬਡੈ ਅਲਾਮੀ ਭਜ ਨ ਜਾਣਦੇ ॥

Raakhsa Badai Alaamee Bhaja Na Jaande ॥

They are greatly knowledgeable in warfare and do not know running back.

ਅੰਤਿ ਹੋਏ ਸੁਰਗਾਮੀ ਮਾਰੇ ਦੇਵਤਾ ॥੧੪॥

Aanti Hoee Surgaamee Maare Devataa ॥14॥

They ultimately went to heaven on being killed by the goddess.14.

ਅਗਣਤ ਘੁਰੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਦਲਾ ਭਿੜੰਦਿਆ ॥

Aganta Ghure Nagaare Dalaa Bhirhaandiaa ॥

With the flaring up of fight between the armies, innumerable trumpets sounded.

ਪਾਏ ਮਹਖਲ ਭਾਰੇ ਦੇਵਾ ਦਾਨਵਾ ॥

Paaee Mahakhla Bhaare Devaa Daanvaa ॥

The gods and demons both have raised great tumult like male buffalos.

ਵਾਹਨਿ ਫਟ ਕਰਾਰੇ ਰਾਕਸ ਰੋਹਲੇ ॥

Vaahani Phatta Karaare Raakasa Rohale ॥

The infuriated demons strike strong blows causing wounds.

ਜਾਪਨਿ ਤੇਗੀ ਆਰੇ ਮਿਆਨੋ ਧੂਹੀਆ ॥

Jaapani Tegee Aare Miaano Dhooheeaa ॥

It appears that the sword pulled from the scabbards are like saws.

ਜੋਧੇ ਵਡੇ ਮੁਨਾਰੇ ਜਾਪਨ ਖੇਤ ਵਿਚ ॥

Jodhe Vade Munaare Jaapan Kheta Vicha ॥

The warriors look like high minarets in the battlefield.

ਦੇਵੀ ਆਪ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਪਬਾਂ ਜਵੇਹਣੇ ॥

Devee Aapa Savaare Pabaan Javehane ॥

The goddess herself killed these mountain-like demons.

ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਖਨਿ ਹਾਰੇ ਧਾਵਨਿ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ ॥

Kade Na Aakhni Haare Dhaavani Saamhane ॥

They never uttered the word ‘defeat’ and ran in front of the goddess.

Durga, holding her sword, killed all the demons.15.

ਉਮਲ ਲਥੇ ਜੋਧੇ ਮਾਰੂ ਵਜਿਆ ॥

Aumala Lathe Jodhe Maaroo Vajiaa ॥

The fatal martial music sounded and the warriors came in the battlefield with enthusiasm.

ਬਦਲ ਜਿਉ ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਰਣ ਵਿਚ ਗਜਿਆ ॥

Badala Jiau Mahikhaasur Ran Vicha Gajiaa ॥

Mahishasura thundered in the field like the cloud

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਜੇਹਾ ਜੋਧਾ ਮੈਥੋ ਭਜਿਆ ॥

Eiaandar Jehaa Jodhaa Maitho Bhajiaa ॥

“The warrior like Indra fled from me

ਕਉਣ ਵਿਚਾਰੀ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਣ ਸਜਿਆ ॥੧੬॥

Kauna Vichaaree Durgaa Jini Ran Sajiaa ॥16॥

“Who is this wretched Durga, who hath come to srart war with me?”16.

ਵਜੇ ਢੋਲ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਦਲਾ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ॥

Vaje Dhola Nagaare Dalaa Mukaabalaa ॥

The drums and trumpets have sounded and the armies have attacked each other.

ਤੀਰ ਫਿਰੈ ਰੈਬਾਰੇ ਆਮ੍ਹੋ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ ॥

Teera Phrii Raibaare Aamho Saamhane ॥

The arrows move opposite to each other guidingly.

ਅਗਣਤ ਬੀਰ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਲਗਦੀ ਕੈਬਰੀ ॥

Aganta Beera Saanghaare Lagadee Kaibaree ॥

With the infliction of arrows countless warriors have been killed.

ਡਿਗੇ ਜਾਣ ਮੁਨਾਰੇ ਮਾਰੈ ਬਿਜੁ ਦੈ ॥

Dige Jaan Munaare Maarai Biju Dai ॥

Falling like the minarets smote by lightning.

ਖੁਲ੍ਹੀ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੈਤ ਅਹਾੜੇ ਸਭੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ॥

Khulahee Vaalee Daita Ahaarhe Sabhe Soorame ॥

All the demon-fighters with untied hair shouted in agony.

ਸੁਤੇ ਜਾਣੁ ਜਟਾਰੇ ਭੰਗਾ ਖਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੧੭॥

Sute Jaanu Jattaare Bhaangaa Khaaei Kai ॥17॥

It seems that the hermits with matted locks are sleeping after eating the intoxicating hemps.17.

ਦੁਹਾ ਕੰਧਾਰਾ ਮੁੰਹ ਜੁੜੇ ਨਾਲ ਧਉਸਾ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

Both the armies are facing each other alongwith the resounding big trumpet.

ਕੜਕਿ ਉਠਿਆ ਫਉਜ ਤੇ ਵਡਾ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

Karhaki Autthiaa Phauja Te Vadaa Haankaaree ॥

The highly egoist warrior of the army thundered.

ਲੈ ਕੈ ਚਲਿਆ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਨਾਲਿ ਵਡੇ ਹਜਾਰੀ ॥

Lai Kai Chaliaa Soorame Naali Vade Hajaaree ॥

He is moving towards the war-arena with thousands of mighty warriors.

ਮਿਆਨੋ ਖੰਡਾ ਧੂਹਿਆ ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

Miaano Khaandaa Dhoohiaa Mahikhaasur Bhaaree ॥

Mahishasura pulled out his huge double-edged sword from his scabbard.

ਉਮਲ ਲਥੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਮਾਰ ਮਚੀ ਕਰਾਰੀ ॥

Aumala Lathe Soorame Maara Machee Karaaree ॥

The fighters entered the field enthusiastically and there occurred formidable fighting.

ਚਲੇ ਜਾਪਨਿ ਰਤ ਦੇ ਸਲਲੇ ਜਟਧਾਰੀ ॥੧੮॥

Chale Jaapani Rata De Salale Jattadhaaree ॥18॥

It appears that the blood flows like the water (of Ganges) from the tangled hair of Shiva.18.

ਸਟ ਪਈ ਜਮਧਾਣੀ ਦਲਾ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ॥

Satta Paeee Jamadhaanee Dalaa Mukaabalaa ॥

When the trumpet, enveloped by the hide of the male buffalo, the vehicle of Yama, sounded, the armies attacked each other.

ਧੂਹਿ ਲਈ ਕਿਰਪਾਣੀ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਮਿਆਨ ਤੇ ॥

Dhoohi Laeee Kripaanee Durgaa Miaan Te ॥

Durga pulled her sword from the scabbard.

ਚੰਡੀ ਰਾਕਸ ਖਾਣੀ ਵਾਹੀ ਦੈਤ ਨੂੰ ॥

Chaandi Raakasa Khaanee Vaahee Daita Nooaan ॥

She struck the demon with that Chandi, the devourer of demons (that is the sword).

ਕੋਪਰ ਚੂਰਿ ਚਵਾਣੀ ਲਥੀ ਕਰਗ ਲੈ ॥

Kopar Choori Chavaanee Lathee Karga Lai ॥

It broke the skull and face into pieces and pierced through the skeleton.

ਪਾਖਰ ਤੁਰਾ ਪਲਾਣੀ ਰੜਕੀ ਧਰਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

Paakhra Turaa Palaanee Rarhakee Dharti Jaaei ॥

And it further pierced through the saddle and caparison of the horse, and struck on the earth supported by the Bull (Dhaul).

ਲੈਦੀ ਅਘਾ ਸਿਧਾਣੀ ਸਿੰਗਾ ਧਉਲ ਦਿਆ ॥

Laidee Aghaa Sidhaanee Siaangaa Dhaula Diaa ॥

It moved further and struck the horns of the Bull.

ਕੂਰਮ ਸਿਰ ਲਹਲਾਣੀ ਦੁਸਮਨ ਮਾਰ ਕੈ ॥

Koorama Sri Lahalaanee Dusman Maara Kai ॥

Then it struck on the Tortoise supporting the Bull and thus killing the enemy.

ਵਢੇ ਗੰਨ ਤਿਖਾਣੀ ਮੂਏ ਖੇਤ ਵਿਚ ॥

Vadhe Gaann Tikhaanee Mooee Kheta Vicha ॥

The demons are lying dead in the battlefield like the pieces of wood sawed by the carpenter.

ਰਣ ਵਿਚ ਘਤੀ ਘਾਣੀ ਲੋਹੂ ਮਿਝ ਦੀ ॥

Ran Vicha Ghatee Ghaanee Lohoo Mijha Dee ॥

The press of blood and marrow has been set in motion in the battlefield.

ਚਾਰੇ ਜੁਗ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਚਲਗਿ ਤੇਗ ਦੀ ॥

Chaare Juga Kahaanee Chalagi Tega Dee ॥

The story of the sword will be related in all the four ages.

ਵਿਧਣ ਖੇਤਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ਮਹਿਖੇ ਦੈਤ ਨੂੰ ॥੧੯॥

Vidhan Kheti Vihaanee Mahikhe Daita Nooaan ॥19॥

On the demon Mahisha the period of agony occurred in the battlefield.19.

ਇਤੀ ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਦੈਤ ਮਾਰੇ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਆਇਆ ॥

Eitee Mahikhaasur Daita Maare Durgaa Aaeiaa ॥

In this way the demon Mahishasura was killed on the arrival of Durga.

ਚਉਦਹ ਲੋਕਾ ਰਾਣੀ ਸਿੰਘੁ ਨਚਾਇਆ ॥

Chaudaha Lokaa Raanee Siaanghu Nachaaeiaa ॥

The queen caused the lion to dance in the fourteen worlds.

ਮਾਰੇ ਵੀਰ ਜਟਾਣੀ ਦਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਗਲੇ ॥

Maare Veera Jattaanee Dala Vichi Agale ॥

She killed a great number of brave demons with matted locks in the battlefield.

ਮੰਗਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਲੀ ਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥

Bahutee Siree Vihaaeeeaa Gharheeaa Kaal Deeaa ॥

The last moments of death came over the heads of many fighters.

ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ਮਾਈਆ ਜੂਝੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ॥੪੩॥

And that none could withstand the marching Durga in the battlefield.

ਬਹੁਤੇ ਬੀਰ ਜਟਲੀ ਉਠੇ ਆਖਿ ਕੈ ॥

Many brave fighters with matted hair got up saing

ਚੋਟਾਂ ਪਾਨ ਤਬਾਲੀ ਜਾਸਨ ਜੁਧ ਨੋ ॥

Chottaan Paan Tabaalee Jaasan Judha No ॥

That drummers should sound the drums because they would go for war.

ਥਰ ਥਰ ਪਿਰਥੀ ਹਾਲੀ ਦਲਾ ਚੜੰਦਿਆਂ ॥

Thar Thar Prithee Haalee Dalaa Charhaandiaana ॥

When the armies marched, the earth trembled

ਨਾਉ ਜਿਵੈ ਹੈ ਹਾਲੀ ਸਹ ਦਰਿਆਉ ਵਿਚਿ ॥

Naau Jivai Hai Haalee Saha Dariaaau Vichi ॥

Like the shaking boat, which is still in the river.

ਧੂੜਿ ਉਤਾਹਾ ਘਾਲੀ ਖੁਰੀ ਤਰੰਗਮਾਂ ॥

And it seemed that the earth is going to Indra for a complaint.44.

They marched in front of Durga, like pilgrims going for Haj to Kaabah (Mecca).

Who had never been satisfied in the war, but now they are satiated and pleased.45.

The enchained double trumpets sounded.

Gathering together in ranks, the warriors with matted hair are engaged in war in the battlefield.

Like the hermits with matted locks going towards the Ganges for taking a bath.46.

Aorrhi Phaujaa Aaeeeaana Beera Charhe Kaandhaaree ॥

The forces came in great numbers and the ranks of warriors marched forward

ਸੜਕਿ ਮਿਆਨਹੁਂ ਕਢੀਆ ਤਿਖੀਆ ਤਰਵਾਰੀ ॥

Sarhaki Miaanhuna Kadheeaa Tikheeaa Tarvaaree ॥

They pulled their sharp swords from their scabbards.

ਕੜਕਿ ਉੱਠੇ ਰਣ ਮਚਿਆ ਵਡੇ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

Karhaki Auo`tthe Ran Machiaa Vade Haankaaree ॥

With the blazing of the war, the great egoist warriors shouted loudly.

ਸਿਰ ਧੜ ਬਾਹਾ ਗਨਲੇ ਫੁਲ ਜੇਹੇ ਬਾੜੀ ॥

Sri Dharha Baahaa Ganle Phula Jehe Baarhee ॥

The pieces of head, trunk and arms look like garden-flowers.

ਜਣੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਟੇ ਬਾਢੀਆਂ ਰੁਖ ਚੰਦਨਿ ਆਰੀ ॥੪੮॥

Janu Kari Katte Baadheeaana Rukh Chaandani Aaree ॥48॥

And (the bodies) appear like the trees of sandalwood cut and sawed by the carpenters.48.

ਦੁਹਾਂ ਕੰਧਾਰਾ ਮੁਹਿ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਣਿ ਸਟ ਪਈ ਖਰਵਾਰ ਕਉ ॥

Duhaan Kaandhaaraa Muhi Jurhe Rani Satta Paeee Khravaara Kau ॥

When the trumpet, enveloped by the hide of a donkey, was beaten, both the forces faced each other.

ਤਕ ਤਕ ਕੈ ਬਰ ਦੁਰਗਸਾਹ ਤਕਿ ਮਾਰੈ ਭਲੇ ਜੁਝਾਰ ਕਉ ॥

Taka Taka Kai Bar Durgasaaha Taki Maarai Bhale Jujhaara Kau ॥

Looking at the warriors, Durga pointedly shot her arrows on the brave fighters.

ਪੈਦਲ ਮਾਰੇ ਹਾਥੀਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਥ ਗਿਰੇ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਕਉ ॥

Paidala Maare Haatheeaa Saangi Ratha Gire Asavaara Kau ॥

The warriors on foot were killed, the elephants were killed alongwith the fall of the chariots and horse- riders.

ਸੋਹਨਿ ਸੰਜਾ ਬਾਗੜਾ ਜਣੁ ਲਗੇ ਫੁਲ ਅਨਾਰ ਕਉ ॥

Sohani Saanjaa Baagarhaa Janu Lage Phula Anaara Kau ॥

The tips of arrows penetrated in the armour like the flowers on pomegranate-plants.

ਗੁਸੇ ਆਈ ਕਾਲਿਕਾ ਹਥ ਸਜੇ ਲੈ ਤਰਵਾਰ ਕਉ ॥

Guse Aaeee Kaalikaa Hatha Saje Lai Tarvaara Kau ॥

The goddess Kali got enraged, holding her sword in her right hand

ਏਦੂੰ ਪਾਰੋ ਓਤ ਪਾਰ ਹਰਿਨਾਕਸਿ ਕਈ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਕਉ ॥

Eedooaan Paaro Aota Paara Harinaakasi Kaeee Hazaara Kau ॥

She destroyed several thousand demons (Hiranayakashipus) from this end of the field to the other end.

ਜਿਣਿ ਇਕੋ ਰਹੀ ਕੰਧਾਰ ਕਉ ॥

Jini Eiko Rahee Kaandhaara Kau ॥

The only one is conquering the army

ਸਦ ਰਹਮਤਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਾਰ ਕਉ ॥੪੯॥

Sada Rahamati Tere Vaara Kau ॥49॥

O goddess! Hail, hail to Thy blow.49.

ਦੁਹਾ ਕੰਧਾਰਾ ਮੁਹਿ ਜੁੜੇ ਸਟ ਪਈ ਜਮਧਾਣ ਕਉ ॥

Duhaa Kaandhaaraa Muhi Jurhe Satta Paeee Jamadhaan Kau ॥

ਤਦਿ ਖਿੰਗ ਨਿਸੁੰਭ ਨਚਾਇਆ ਡਾਲਿ ਉਪਰ ਬਰਗੁਸਤਾਣ ਕਉ ॥

Tadi Khiaanga Nisuaanbha Nachaaeiaa Daali Aupar Bargustaan Kau ॥

Then Nisumbh caused the horse to dance, putting on his back the saddle-armour.

ਫੜੀ ਬਿਲੰਦ ਮੰਗਾਇਓਸੁ ਫਰਮਾਇਸ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਲਤਾਨ ਕਉ ॥

Pharhee Bilaanda Maangaaeiaosu Pharmaaeisa Kari Mulataan Kau ॥

She held the big bow, which was caused to be brought on order form Musltan.

ਗੁਸੇ ਆਈ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ ਰਣ ਅੰਦਰ ਘਤਣ ਘਾਣ ਕਉ ॥

Guse Aaeee Saamhane Ran Aandar Ghatan Ghaan Kau ॥

In her fury, she came in front in order to fill the battlefield with the mud of blood and fat.

ਅਗੇ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਈ ਦੁਰਗਸਾਹ ਬਢਿ ਸੁੰਭਨ ਬਹੀ ਪਲਾਣ ਕਉ ॥

Age Tega Vagaaeee Durgasaaha Badhi Suaanbhan Bahee Palaan Kau ॥

Durga struck the sword in front of her, cutting the demon-king, penetrated through the horse-saddle.

ਰੜਕੀ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਧਰਤ ਕਉ ਬਢਿ ਪਾਖਰ ਬਢਿ ਕਿਕਾਣ ਕਉ ॥

Rarhakee Jaaei Kai Dharta Kau Badhi Paakhra Badhi Kikaan Kau ॥

Then it penetrated further and struck the earth after cutting the saddle-armour and the horse.

ਬੀਰ ਪਲਾਣੋ ਡਿਗਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਸਿਜਦਾ ਸੁੰਭ ਸੁਜਾਣ ਕਉ ॥

Beera Palaano Digiaa Kari Sijadaa Suaanbha Sujaan Kau ॥

The great hero (Nisumbh) fell down from the horse-saddle, offering salutation to the wise Sumbh.

ਸਾਬਾਸ ਸਲੋਣੇ ਖਾਨ ਕਉ ॥

Saabaasa Salone Khaan Kau ॥

Hail, hail, to the winsome chieftain (Khan).

ਸਦ ਸਾਬਾਸ ਤੇਰੇ ਤਾਣ ਕਉ ॥

Sada Saabaasa Tere Taan Kau ॥

Hail, hail, ever to thy strength.

ਤਾਰੀਫਾ ਪਾਨ ਚਬਾਣ ਕਉ ॥

Taareephaa Paan Chabaan Kau ॥

Praises are offered for the chewing of betel.

ਸਦ ਰਹਮਤ ਕੈਫਾ ਖਾਣ ਕਉ ॥

Sada Rahamata Kaiphaa Khaan Kau ॥

Hail, hail to thy addiction.

ਦੁਰਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਨਵੀ ਗਹਿ ਸੰਘਰ ਕਥੇ ॥

Durgaa Ate Daanvee Gahi Saanghar Kathe ॥

Durga and demons sounded their trumpets, in the remarkable war.

ਓਰੜ ਉਠੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਆਇ ਡਾਹੈ ਮਥੇ ॥

Aorrha Autthe Soorame Aaei Daahai Mathe ॥

The warriors arose in great numbers and have come to fight.

ਕਟਿ ਤੁੰਫੰਗੀ ਕੈਬਰੀ ਦਲ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨਿਕਥੇ ॥

Katti Tuaanphaangee Kaibaree Dala Saahib Nikathe ॥

They have come to tread through the forces in order to destroy (the enemy) with guns and arrows.

ਵੇਖਣਿ ਜੰਗ ਫਰੇਸਤੇ ਅਸਮਾਨਹੁੰ ਲਥੇ ॥੫੧॥

Vekhni Jaanga Pharesate Asamaanhuaan Lathe ॥51॥

The angels come down (to the earth) from the sky in order to see the war.51.

ਦੋਹਾਂ ਕੰਧਾਰਾ ਮੁਹ ਜੁੜੇ ਦਲ ਘੁਰੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ॥

Dohaan Kaandhaaraa Muha Jurhe Dala Ghure Nagaare ॥

The trumpets have sounded in the army and both the forces face each other.

ਓਰੜਿ ਆਏ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਸਿਰਦਾਰ ਰਣਿਆਰੇ ॥

Aorrhi Aaee Soorame Sridaara Raniaare ॥

The chief and brave warriors swayed in the field.

ਲੈ ਲੈ ਤੇਗਾ ਬਰਛੀਆ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਉਭਾਰੇ ॥

Lai Lai Tegaa Barchheeaa Hathiaara Aubhaare ॥

They raised their weapons including the swords and daggers.

ਟੋਪ ਪਟੇਲਾ ਪਾਖਰਾ ਗਲਿ ਸੰਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥

Ttopa Pattelaa Paakhraa Gali Saanja Savaare ॥

They have bedecked themselves with helmets on their heads, and armour around their necks alongwith their horse-sddles with belts.

ਲੈ ਕੇ ਬਰਛੀ ਦੁਰਗਸਾਹ ਬਹੁ ਦਾਨਵ ਮਾਰੇ ॥

Lai Ke Barchhee Durgasaaha Bahu Daanva Maare ॥

Durga holding her dagger, killed many demons.

ਚੜੇ ਰਥੀ ਗਜ ਘੋੜਿਈ ਮਾਰਿ ਭੁਇ ਤੇ ਡਾਰੇ ॥

Charhe Rathee Gaja Ghorhieee Maari Bhuei Te Daare ॥

She killed and threw those on the round who were riding chariots, elephants and horses.

ਜਣੁ ਹਲਵਾਈ ਸੀਖ ਨਾਲ ਬਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਵੜੇ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥੫੨॥

Janu Halavaaeee Seekh Naala Biaannha Varhe Autaare ॥52॥

It appear that the confectioner has cooked small round cakes of grounded pulse, piercing them with a spike.52.

ਦੁਹਾ ਕੰਧਾਰਾ ਮੁਹਿ ਜੁੜੇ ਨਾਲ ਧਉਸਾ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

Duhaa Kaandhaaraa Muhi Jurhe Naala Dhausaa Bhaaree ॥

Alongwith the sounding of the large trumpet, both the forces faced each other.

ਲਈ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਦੁਰਗਸਾਹਿ ਵਰ ਜਾਗਣਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

Laeee Bhagautee Durgasaahi Var Jaagani Bhaaree ॥

Durga held out her sword, appearing like great lustrous fire

ਲਾਈ ਰਾਜੇ ਸੁੰਭ ਨੋ ਰਤ ਪੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥

Laaeee Raaje Suaanbha No Rata Peeaai Piaaree ॥

She struck it on the king Sumbh and this lovely weapon drinks blood.

ਸੁੰਭ ਪਾਲਾਣੋ ਡਿਗਿਆ ਉਪਮਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

Suaanbha Paalaano Digiaa Aupamaa Veechaaree ॥

Sumbh fell down from the saddle for which the following simile hath been thought.

ਡੁਬਿ ਰਤੁ ਨਾਲਹੁ ਨਿਕਲੀ ਬਰਛੀ ਦੋਧਾਰੀ ॥

Dubi Ratu Naalahu Nikalee Barchhee Dodhaaree ॥

That the double-edged dagger, smeared with blood, which hath come out (from the body of Sumbh)

ਜਾਣੁ ਰਜਾਦੀ ਉਤਰੀ ਪੈਨ੍ਹਿ ਸੂਹੀ ਸਾਰ੍ਹੀ ॥੫੩॥

Jaanu Rajaadee Autaree Painih Soohee Saarahee ॥53॥

Seems like a princess coming down from her loft, wearing the red sari.53.

ਦੁਰਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਨਵੀ ਭੇੜ ਪਇਆ ਸਬਾਹੀਂ ॥

Durgaa Ate Daanvee Bherha Paeiaa Sabaaheena ॥

The war between Durga and the demons started early in the morning.

ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਜੂਤੇ ਦੁਰਗਸਾਹ ਗਹਿ ਸਭਨੀ ਬਾਹੀਂ ॥

Sasatar Pajoote Durgasaaha Gahi Sabhanee Baaheena ॥

Durga held her weapons firmly in all her arms.

ਸੁੰਭ ਨਿਸੁੰਭ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਆ ਵਥ ਜੇ ਹੈ ਸਾਹੀਂ ॥

Suaanbha Nisuaanbha Saanghaariaa Vatha Je Hai Saaheena ॥

She killed both Sumbh and Nisumbh, who were the masters of all the materials.

ਫਉਜਾ ਰਾਕਸ ਆਰੀਆਂ ਵੇਖ ਰੋਵਨਿ ਧਾਹੀਂ ॥

Phaujaa Raakasa Aareeaana Vekh Rovani Dhaaheena ॥

Seeing this, the helpless forces of the demons, weep bitterly.

ਮੁਹਿ ਕੜੂਚੇ ਘਾਹੁ ਦੇ ਛਡਿ ਘੋੜੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ॥

Muhi Karhooche Ghaahu De Chhadi Ghorhe Raaheena ॥

Accepting their defeat (by putting the straws of grass in their mouth), and leaving their horses in the way

ਭਜਦੇ ਹੋਇ ਮਾਰੀਅਨ ਮੁੜਿ ਝਾਕਨਿ ਨਾਹੀਂ ॥੫੪॥

Bhajade Hoei Maareean Murhi Jhaakani Naaheena ॥54॥

They are being killed, while fleeing, without looking back.54.

ਸੁੰਭ ਨਿਸੁੰਭ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਜਮ ਦੇ ਧਾਮ ਨੋ ॥

Suaanbha Nisuaanbha Patthaaeiaa Jama De Dhaam No ॥

Sumbh and Nisumbh were dispatched to the abode of Yama

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਸਦਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਜ ਅਭਿਖੇਖ ਨੋ ॥

Eiaandar Sadi Bulaaeiaa Raaja Abhikhekh No ॥

And Indra was called for crowning him.

ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਫਿਰਾਇਆ ਰਾਜੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਦੇ ॥

Sri Par Chhatar Phiraaeiaa Raaje Eiaandar De ॥

The canopy was held up over the head of king Indra.

ਚਉਦੀ ਲੋਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਜਸੁ ਜਗਮਾਤ ਦਾ ॥

Chaudee Lokee Chhaaeiaa Jasu Jagamaata Daa ॥

The praise of the mother of the universe spread over all the fourteen worlds.

ਦੁਰਗਾ ਪਾਠ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਸਭੇ ਪਉੜੀਆ ॥

Durgaa Paattha Banaaeiaa Sabhe Paurheeaa ॥

All the Pauris (stanza) of this DURGA PATH (The text about the exploits of Durga) have been composed

ਫੇਰਿ ਨ ਜੂਨੀ ਆਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੫੫॥

Pheri Na Joonee Aaeiaa Jini Eih Gaaeiaa ॥55॥

And that person who sings it, will not take birth again.55.
