TOTAK STANZA

ਚਿਤਿ ਚੌਕ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਭਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਸੁਤੰ ॥

Chiti Chouka Rahiyo Subhi Dekhi Sutaan ॥

One day the king went to the school and seeing his son, he was startled.

ਜੋ ਪੜਿਯੋ ਦਿਜ ਤੇ ਸੁਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਰੜੋ ॥

Jo Parhiyo Dija Te Suna Taahi Rarho ॥

ਨਿਰਭੈ ਸਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਪੜੋ ॥੫॥

Nribhai Sisu Naamu Gupaala Parho ॥5॥

When the king asked, the child told whatever he had learnt and fearlessly began to read the Name of Lord-God.5.

ਸੁਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਰਿਸ੍ਯੋ ਅਸੁਰੰ ॥

Suni Naamu Gupaala Risaio Asuraan ॥

ਬਿਨੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਸੁ ਕਉਣੁ ਭਜੋ ਦੁਸਰੰ ॥

Binu Mohi Su Kaunu Bhajo Dusraan ॥

On hearing the Name of Lord-God, the demon became furious and said, “Who else is there except me on whom you are meditating?”

ਜੀਯ ਮਾਹਿ ਧਰੋ ਸਿਸੁ ਯਾਹਿ ਹਨੋ ॥

Jeeya Maahi Dharo Sisu Yaahi Hano ॥

ਜੜ ਕਿਉ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ਭਨੋ ॥੬॥

Jarha Kiau Bhagavaan Ko Naam Bhano ॥6॥

He decided to kill this student and said, “O fool why are you repeating the name of Lord-God?”6.

ਜਲ ਅਉਰ ਥਲੰ ਇਕ ਬੀਰ ਮਨੰ ॥

Jala Aaur Thalaan Eika Beera Manaan ॥

ਇਹ ਕਾਹਿ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਨੰ ॥

Eih Kaahi Gupaala Ko Naamu Bhanaan ॥

“Only Hiranayakashipu is considered the mithty-one in water and on land , then why are you repeating the name of Lord-God”?

ਤਬ ਹੀ ਤਿਹ ਬਾਧਤ ਥੰਮ ਭਏ ॥

Taba Hee Tih Baadhata Thaanma Bhaee ॥

ਸੁਨਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਨਨ ਦਾਨਵ ਬੈਨ ਧਏ ॥੭॥

Suni Sarvanna Daanva Bain Dhaee ॥7॥

Then, as commanded by the king, the demons tied him with the column.7.

ਗਹਿ ਮੂੜ ਚਲੇ ਸਿਸੁ ਮਾਰਨ ਕੋ ॥

Gahi Moorha Chale Sisu Maaran Ko ॥

ਨਿਕਸ੍ਯੋ ਬ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਉਬਾਰਨ ਕੋ ॥

Nikasaio Ba Gupaala Aubaaran Ko ॥

When those foolish persons advanced to kill this student, the Lord manifested Himself at the same time in order to protect His disciple.

ਚਕਚਉਧ ਰਹੇ ਜਨ ਦੇਖਿ ਸਬੈ ॥

Chakachaudha Rahe Jan Dekhi Sabai ॥

ਨਿਕਸ੍ਯੋ ਹਰਿ ਫਾਰਿ ਕਿਵਾਰ ਜਬੈ ॥੮॥

Nikasaio Hari Phaari Kivaara Jabai ॥8॥

Al those who saw the Lord at that time were astonished, the Lord had manifested Himself by tearing off the doors.8

ਲਖਿ ਦੇਵ ਦਿਵਾਰ ਸਬੈ ਥਹਰੇ ॥

Lakhi Dev Divaara Sabai Thahare ॥

ਅਵਿਲੋਕਿ ਚਰਾਚਰ ਹੂੰਹਿ ਹਿਰੇ ॥

Aviloki Charaachar Hooaanhi Hire ॥

Seeing Him, all the gods and demons trembled and all the animate and inanimate objects became fearful in their bearts

ਗਰਜੇ ਨਰਸਿੰਘ ਨਰਾਂਤ ਕਰੰ ॥

Garje Narsiaangha Naraanta Karaan ॥

ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਰਤ ਕੀਏ ਮੁਖ ਸ੍ਰੋਣ ਭਰੰ ॥੯॥

Driga Rata Keeee Mukh Sarona Bharaan ॥9॥

The Lord in the form of Narsingh (man-lion), with red eyes and the mouth filled with blood, thundered dreadfully.9.

ਲਖਿ ਦਾਨਵ ਭਾਜ ਚਲੇ ਸਬ ਹੀ ॥

Lakhi Daanva Bhaaja Chale Saba Hee ॥

ਗਰਜਿਯੋ ਨਰਸਿੰਘ ਰਣੰ ਜਬ ਹੀ ॥

Garjiyo Narsiaangha Ranaan Jaba Hee ॥

Seeing this and hearing the thunder of Narsingh all the demons fled

ਇਕ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਠਾਂਢਿ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਰਣ ਮੈ ॥

Eika Bhoopti Tthaandhi Rahiyo Ran Mai ॥

ਗਹਿ ਹਾਥਿ ਗਦਾ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਮਨ ਮੈ ॥੧੦॥

Gahi Haathi Gadaa Nribhai Man Mai ॥10॥

Only the Emperor, fearlessly holding his mace in his hand, stood firmly in that battlefield.10.

ਲਰਜੇ ਸਬ ਸੂਰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੰ ਗਰਜੇ ॥

Larje Saba Soora Nripaan Garje ॥

ਸਮੁਹਾਤ ਭਏ ਭਟ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਕੇ ॥

Samuhaata Bhaee Bhatta Kehari Ke ॥

When the Emperor roared loudly, then all the brave warriors trembled and all those warriors came forward in groups before that lion.

ਜੁ ਗਏ ਸਮੁਹੇ ਛਿਤ ਤੈ ਪਟਕੇ ॥

Ju Gaee Samuhe Chhita Tai Pattake ॥

ਰਣਿ ਭੈ ਰਣਧੀਰ ਬਟਾ ਨਟ ਕੇ ॥੧੧॥

Rani Bhai Randheera Battaa Natta Ke ॥11॥

All those who went in front of Narsingh, He caught hold of all those warriors like a juggler and knocked them down of the ground.11.

ਬਬਕੇ ਰਣਧੀਰ ਸੁ ਬੀਰ ਘਣੇ ॥

Babake Randheera Su Beera Ghane ॥

ਰਹਿਗੇ ਮਨੋ ਕਿੰਸਕ ਸ੍ਰੋਣ ਸਣੇ ॥

Rahige Mano Kiaansaka Sarona Sane ॥

The warriors shouted loudly at one another and saturated with blood began to fall.

ਉਮਗੇ ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰਨ ਤੇ ਰਿਪੁ ਯੌ ॥

Aumage Chahooaan Aorn Te Ripu You ॥

ਬਰਸਾਤਿ ਬਹਾਰਨ ਅਭ੍ਰਨ ਜਿਯੋ ॥੧੨॥

Barsaati Bahaaran Abharn Jiyo ॥12॥

The enemies advanced from all the four sides with such intensity like the clouds in the rainy season.12.

ਬਰਖੈ ਸਰ ਸੁਧ ਸਿਲਾ ਸਿਤਿਯੰ ॥

Barkhi Sar Sudha Silaa Sitiyaan ॥

ਉਮਡੇ ਬਰਬੀਰ ਦਸੋ ਦਿਸਿਯੰ ॥

Aumade Barbeera Daso Disiyaan ॥

Advancing from all the ten directions, the warriors began to shower the arrows and stones

ਚਮਕੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਣ ਸੁ ਬਾਣ ਜੁਧੰ ॥

Chamakaanta Kripaan Su Baan Judhaan ॥

ਫਹਰੰਤ ਧੁਜਾ ਜਨੁ ਬੀਰ ਕ੍ਰੁਧੰ ॥੧੩॥

Phaharaanta Dhujaa Janu Beera Karudhaan ॥13॥

The swords and arrows glistened in the war-field and the brave fighters began to flutter their flags.13.

ਹਹਰੰਤ ਹਠੀ ਬਰਖੰਤ ਸਰੰ ॥

Haharaanta Hatthee Barkhaanta Saraan ॥

The persistent warriors with loud shouts are showering a volley of arrows in this way,

ਜਨੁ ਸਾਵਨ ਮੇਘ ਬੁਠਿਯੋ ਦੁਸਰੰ ॥

Janu Saavan Megha Butthiyo Dusraan ॥

As if it is the second cloudburst in the mont of Swan

ਫਰਹੰਤ ਧੁਜਾ ਹਹਰੰਤ ਹਯੰ ॥

Pharhaanta Dhujaa Haharaanta Hayaan ॥

The flags are fluttering and the horses are neighing

ਉਪਜਿਯੋ ਜੀਅ ਦਾਨਵ ਰਾਇ ਭਯੰ ॥੧੪॥

Aupajiyo Jeea Daanva Raaei Bhayaan ॥14॥

And seeing all this scene, the heart of the demon-king was filled with fear.14.

ਹਿਹਨਾਤ ਹਯੰ ਗਰਜੰਤ ਗਜੰ ॥

Hihnaata Hayaan Garjaanta Gajaan ॥

The horses are neighing and the elephants are roaring

ਭਟ ਬਾਹ ਕਟੀ ਜਨੁ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਧੁਜੰ ॥

Bhatta Baaha Kattee Janu Eiaandar Dhujaan ॥

The chopped long arms of the warriors look like the flag of Indra

ਤਰਫੰਤ ਭਟੰ ਗਰਜੰ ਗਜੰ ॥

Tarphaanta Bhattaan Garjaan Gajaan ॥

The warriors are writhing and the elephants are roaring in such a way,

ਸੁਨ ਕੈ ਧੁਨਿ ਸਾਵਣ ਮੇਘ ਲਜੰ ॥੧੫॥

Suna Kai Dhuni Saavan Megha Lajaan ॥15॥

That the clouds of the month of Sawan are feeling shy.15.

ਬਿਚਲ੍ਯੋ ਪਗ ਦ੍ਵੈਕੁ ਫਿਰਿਯੋ ਪੁਨਿ ਜਿਯੋ ॥

Bichalaio Paga Davaiku Phiriyo Puni Jiyo ॥

As soon as the horse of Hiranayakashipu turned a little, he himself deviated and retraced two steps

ਕਰਿ ਪੁੰਛ ਲਗੇ ਅਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੁਧਤ ਜਿਯੋ ॥

Kari Puaanchha Lage Ahi Karudhata Jiyo ॥

But still he was infuriated in the manner of the snake who gets infuriated when its tail is crushed by a foot

ਰਣਰੰਗ ਸਮੈ ਮੁਖ ਯੋ ਚਮਕ੍ਯੋ ॥

Ranraanga Samai Mukh Yo Chamakaio ॥

His face was shining in the battlefield,

ਲਖਿ ਸੂਰ ਸਰੋਰਹੁ ਸੋ ਦਮਕ੍ਯੋ ॥੧੬॥

Lakhi Soora Sarorahu So Damakaio ॥16॥

Like the blossoming of the lotus on seeing the sun.16.

ਰਣ ਰੰਗ ਤੁਰੰਗਨ ਐਸ ਭਯੋ ॥

Ran Raanga Turaangan Aaisa Bhayo ॥

ਸਿਵ ਧਿਆਨ ਛੁਟ੍ਯੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਗਿਰਿਯੋ ॥

Siva Dhiaan Chhuttaio Barhamaanda Giriyo ॥

The horses are moving in so much intoxication and creating noise that the attention of Shiva was dissolved, And it seemed that the universe had been displaced

ਸਰ ਸੇਲ ਸਿਲਾ ਸਿਤ ਐਸ ਬਹੇ ॥

Sar Sela Silaa Sita Aaisa Bahe ॥

ਨਭ ਅਉਰ ਧਰਾ ਦੋਊ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹੇ ॥੧੭॥

Nabha Aaur Dharaa Doaoo Poori Rahe ॥17॥

The arrows, daggers and stones were flying and filling both the earth and the sky.17.

ਗਣ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ਦੇਖਿ ਦੋਊ ਹਰਖੇ ॥

Gan Gaandharba Dekhi Doaoo Harkhe ॥

ਪੁਹਪਾਵਲਿ ਦੇਵ ਸਭੈ ਬਰਖੇ ॥

Puhapaavali Dev Sabhai Barkhe ॥

The Ganas and Gandharvas, seeing both, were pleased and the gods showered flowers.

ਮਿਲ ਗੇ ਭਟ ਆਪ ਬਿਖੈ ਦੋਊ ਯੋ ॥

Mila Ge Bhatta Aapa Bikhi Doaoo Yo ॥

ਸਿਸ ਖੇਲਤ ਰੈਣਿ ਹੁਡੂਹੁਡ ਜਿਯੋ ॥੧੮॥

Sisa Khelta Raini Hudoohuda Jiyo ॥18॥

Two warriors were fighting with each other like the children competing with one another in their play during the night.18.
