ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਪਰਖੇ ਹੀਰਾ ॥
ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਰਾਫੀ ਕਰੈ ॥
ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਾ ਪੈਕਾਰੁ ॥
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਵਾਟ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਦੇਵਾ ਸਗਲ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥
ਮੈ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਖੂਟੁ ॥੪॥
ਪੰਚ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਵ ਚਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਕਲ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਉ ਉਲਟਿ ਪਰਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥੬॥
ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
ਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੭॥
ਹੀਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲੁ ॥
ਮਨੁ ਮੋਤੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
One who contemplates his own self, tests the worth of the jewel.
With a single glance, the Perfect Guru saves him.
When the Guru is pleased, one's mind comforts itself. ||1||
He is such a banker, who tests us.
By His True Glance of Grace, we are blessed with the Love of the One Lord, and are saved. ||1||Pause||
The capital of the Naam is immaculate and sublime.
That peddler is rendered pure, who is imbued with the Truth.
Praising the Lord, in the house of poise, he attains the Guru, the Creator. ||2||
One who burns away hope and desire through the Word of the Shabad,
Chants the Lord's Name, and inspires others to chant it as well.
Through the Guru, he finds the Path home, to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||3||
His body becomes golden, by the Lord's Incomparable Light.
He beholds the divine beauty in all the three worlds.
That inexhaustible wealth of Truth is now in my lap. ||4||
In the five elements, the three worlds, the nine regions and the four directions, the Lord is pervading.
He supports the earth and the sky, exercising His almighty power.
He turns the outgoing mind around. ||5||
The fool does not realize what he sees with his eyes.
He does not taste with his tongue, and does not understand what is said.
Intoxicated with poison, he argues with the world. ||6||
In the uplifting society, one is uplifted.
He chases after virtue and washes off his sins.
Without serving the Guru, celestial poise is not obtained. ||7||
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a diamond, a jewel, a ruby.
The pearl of the mind is the inner wealth.
O Nanak, the Lord tests us, and blesses us with His Glance of Grace. ||8||5||

nullnullnullਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਇਕ (ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ) ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ (ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚੇ ਦਿਲੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਤੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਡੋਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ) ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥nullਗੁਰੂ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸ਼ਾਹ (ਸਰਾਫ਼) ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਸਰਾਫ਼ੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਉਹ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਰਤ ਪਰਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਦੇ ਉਕਾਈ ਨਾਹ ਖਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥nullnull(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ (ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਨਿਆਰੀਏ ਵਾਂਗ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥nullnullਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ) ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਹਲ ਘਰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਕ ਆਸਾ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਕ ਫੁਰਨਾ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥nullnullਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਸੁੱਧ) ਸੋਨੇ ਵਰਗੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਸਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਨਿਰਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੀ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਆਕਾਰ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ (ਸਰਗੁਣ) ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਤੋਂ) ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੪॥nullnullਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਨੌ ਖੰਡਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਕੂਟਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ (ਥਾਂ ਸਿਰ) ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ; ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਆਕਾਰ ਵਲ ਦੌੜਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲ ਪਰਤਾ ਕੇ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥nullnull(ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ, ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਹੁਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਝਗੜੇ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥nullnullਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ) ਔਗੁਣ ਧੋ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਤੇ) ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ॥੭॥nullnullਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੋਤੀ (ਵਰਗਾ ਸੁੱਚਾ) ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀਰਾ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਤੇ ਲਾਲ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੫॥
