Saasath Baedh Sinmrith Sar Thaeraa Surasaree Charan Samaanee ||

The Shaastras, the Vedas and the Simritees are contained in the ocean of Your Name; the River Ganges is held in Your Feet.

ਸਾਖਾ ਤੀਨਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਮਤਿ ਰਾਵੈ ਤੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਸਰਬ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥੧॥

Saakhaa Theen Mool Math Raavai Thoon Thaan Sarab Viddaanee ||1||

The intellect can understand the world of the three modes, but You, O Primal Lord, are totally astounding. ||1||

Thaethees Karorree Dhaas Thumhaarae Ridhh Sidhh Praan Adhhaaree ||

Three hundred thirty million gods are Your servants. You bestow wealth, and the supernatural powers of the Siddhas; You are the Support of the breath of life.

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਰੂਪ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਲਖਣੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

Thaa Kae Roop N Jaahee Lakhanae Kiaa Kar Aakh Veechaaree ||2||

His beauteous forms cannot be comprehended; what can anyone accomplish by discussing and debating? ||2||

ਤੀਨਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਜੁਗ ਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਾਰੇ ਤੇਰੀਆ ਖਾਣੀ ॥

Theen Gunaa Thaerae Jug Hee Anthar Chaarae Thaereeaa Khaanee ||

Throughout the ages, You are the three qualities, and the four sources of creation.

ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਥੇ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥੩॥

Karam Hovai Thaa Param Padh Paaeeai Kathhae Akathh Kehaanee ||3||

If You show Your Mercy, then one obtains the supreme status, and speaks the Unspoken Speech. ||3||

ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥

Thoon Karathaa Keeaa Sabh Thaeraa Kiaa Ko Karae Paraanee ||

You are the Creator; all are created by You. What can any mortal being do?

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਅਪਣੀ ਸਾਈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੪॥

Jaa Ko Nadhar Karehi Thoon Apanee Saaee Sach Samaanee ||4||

He alone, upon whom You shower Your Grace, is absorbed into the Truth. ||4||

ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਲੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਜੇਤੀ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀ ॥

Naam Thaeraa Sabh Koee Laeth Hai Jaethee Aavan Jaanee ||

Everyone who comes and goes chants Your Name.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੋਰ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਇਆਣੀ ॥੫॥

Jaa Thudhh Bhaavai Thaa Guramukh Boojhai Hor Manamukh Firai Eiaanee ||5||

When it is pleasing to Your Will, then the Gurmukh understands. Otherwise, the self-willed manmukhs wander in ignorance. ||5||

ਚਾਰੇ ਵੇਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਕਉ ਦੀਏ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

Chaarae Vaedh Brehamae Ko Dheeeae Parr Parr Karae Veechaaree ||

You gave the four Vedas to Brahma, for him to read and read continually, and reflect upon.

ਤਾ ਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਪੁੜਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰੀ ॥੬॥

Thaa Kaa Hukam N Boojhai Bapurraa Narak Surag Avathaaree ||6||

The wretched one does not understand His Command, and is reincarnated into heaven and hell. ||6||

ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗਹ ਕੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਕੀਏ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰੀ ॥

Jugeh Jugeh Kae Raajae Keeeae Gaavehi Kar Avathaaree ||

In each and every age, He creates the kings, who are sung of as His Incarnations.

ਤਿਨ ਭੀ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੭॥

Thin Bhee Anth N Paaeiaa Thaa Kaa Kiaa Kar Aakh Veechaaree ||7||

Even they have not found His limits; what can I speak of and contemplate? ||7||

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥

Thoon Sachaa Thaeraa Keeaa Sabh Saachaa Dhaehi Th Saach Vakhaanee ||

You are True, and all that You do is True. If You bless me with the Truth, I will speak on it.

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਬੁਝਾਵਹਿ ਅਪਣਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੮॥੧॥੨੩॥

Jaa Ko Sach Bujhaavehi Apanaa Sehajae Naam Samaanee ||8||1||23||

One whom You inspire to understand the Truth, is easily absorbed into the Naam. ||8||1||23||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਮਰਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

Sathigur Hamaraa Bharam Gavaaeiaa ||

The True Guru has dispelled my doubts.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

Har Naam Niranjan Mann Vasaaeiaa ||

He has enshrined the Immaculate Name of the Lord within my mind.

ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Sabadh Cheen Sadhaa Sukh Paaeiaa ||1||

Focusing on the Word of the Shabad, I have obtained lasting peace. ||1||

ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

Sun Man Maerae Thath Giaan ||

Listen, O my mind, to the essence of spiritual wisdom.

ਦੇਵਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Dhaevan Vaalaa Sabh Bidhh Jaanai Guramukh Paaeeai Naam Nidhhaan ||1|| Rehaao ||

The Great Giver knows our condition completely; the Gurmukh obtains the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

Sathigur Bhaettae Kee Vaddiaaee ||

The great glory of meeting the True Guru is

ਜਿਨਿ ਮਮਤਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥

Jin Mamathaa Agan Thrisanaa Bujhaaee ||

That it has quenched the fire of possessiveness and desire;

ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ॥੨॥

Sehajae Maathaa Har Gun Gaaee ||2||

Imbued with peace and poise, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥

Vin Gur Poorae Koe N Jaanee ||

Without the Perfect Guru, no one knows the Lord.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਣੀ ॥

Maaeiaa Mohi Dhoojai Lobhaanee ||

Attached to Maya, they are engrossed in duality.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੩॥

Guramukh Naam Milai Har Baanee ||3||

The Gurmukh receives the Naam, and the Bani of the Lord's Word. ||3||

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤਪਾਂ ਸਿਰਿ ਤਪੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

Gur Saevaa Thapaan Sir Thap Saar ||

Service to the Guru is the most excellent and sublime penance of penances.

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਭ ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

Har Jeeo Man Vasai Sabh Dhookh Visaaranehaar ||

The Dear Lord dwells in the mind, and all suffering departs.

ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥

Dhar Saachai Dheesai Sachiaar ||4||

Then, at the Gate of the True Lord, one appears truthful. ||4||

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

Gur Saevaa Thae Thribhavan Sojhee Hoe ||

Serving the Guru, one comes to know the three worlds.

ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

Aap Pashhaan Har Paavai Soe ||

Understanding his own self, he obtains the Lord.

ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥

Saachee Baanee Mehal Paraapath Hoe ||5||

Through the True Word of His Bani, we enter the Mansion of His Presence. ||5||

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥

Gur Saevaa Thae Sabh Kul Oudhhaarae ||

Serving the Guru, all of one's generations are saved.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

Niramal Naam Rakhai Our Dhhaarae ||

Keep the Immaculate Naam enshrined within your heart.

ਸਾਚੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਸਾਚਿ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥੬॥

Saachee Sobhaa Saach Dhuaarae ||6||

In the Court of the True Lord, you shall be adorned with True Glory. ||6||

ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ॥

Sae Vaddabhaagee J Gur Saevaa Laaeae ||

How very fortunate are they, who are committed to the Guru's service.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥

Anadhin Bhagath Sach Naam Dhrirraaeae ||

Night and day, they are engaged in devotional worship; the True Name is implanted within them.

ਨਾਮੇ ਉਧਰੇ ਕੁਲ ਸਬਾਏ ॥੭॥

Naamae Oudhharae Kul Sabaaeae ||7||

Through the Naam, all of one's generations are saved. ||7||

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

Nanak chants the true thought.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖਹੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

Keep the Name of the Lord enshrined within your heart.

ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੮॥੨॥੨੪॥

Har Bhagathee Raathae Mokh Dhuaar ||8||2||24||

Imbued with devotion to the Lord, the gate of salvation is found. ||8||2||24||

ਆਸਾ ਆਸ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

Aasaa Aas Karae Sabh Koee ||

Everyone lives, hoping in hope.

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹੋਈ ॥

Hukamai Boojhai Niraasaa Hoee ||

Understanding His Command, one becomes free of desire.

ਆਸਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੁਤੇ ਕਈ ਲੋਈ ॥

Aasaa Vich Suthae Kee Loee ||

So many are asleep in hope.

ਸੋ ਜਾਗੈ ਜਾਗਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥

So Jaagai Jaagaavai Soee ||1||

He alone wakes up, whom the Lord awakens. ||1||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

The True Guru has led me to understand the Naam, the Name of the Lord; without the Naam, hunger does not go away.

ਨਾਮੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Through the Naam, the fire of desire is extinguished; the Naam is obtained by His Will. ||1||Pause||

ਕਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥

Kal Keerath Sabadh Pashhaan ||

In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, realize the Word of the Shabad.

ਏਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਚੂਕੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥

Eaehaa Bhagath Chookai Abhimaan ||

By this devotional worship, egotism is eliminated.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥

Sathigur Saeviai Hovai Paravaan ||

Serving the True Guru, one becomes approved.

ਜਿਨਿ ਆਸਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੨॥

So know the One, who created hope and desire. ||2||

What shall we offer to one who proclaims the Word of the Shabad?

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

Kar Kirapaa Naam Mann Vasaaeae ||

By His Grace, the Naam is enshrined within our minds.

ਇਹੁ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

Eihu Sir Dheejai Aap Gavaaeae ||

Offer your head, and shed your self-conceit.

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥

Hukamai Boojhae Sadhaa Sukh Paaeae ||3||

One who understands the Lord's Command finds lasting peace. ||3||

ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥

Aap Karae Thai Aap Karaaeae ||

He Himself does, and causes others to do.

ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

Aapae Guramukh Naam Vasaaeae ||

He Himself enshrines His Name in the mind of the Gurmukh.

ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥

Aap Bhulaavai Aap Maarag Paaeae ||

He Himself misleads us, and He Himself puts us back on the Path.

ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੪॥

Sachai Sabadh Sach Samaaeae ||4||

Through the True Word of the Shabad, we merge into the True Lord. ||4||

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੀ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

Sachaa Sabadh Sachee Hai Baanee ||

True is the Shabad, and True is the Word of the Lord's Bani.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥

Guramukh Jug Jug Aakh Vakhaanee ||

In each and every age, the Gurmukhs speak it and chant it.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੋਲਾਣੀ ॥

Manamukh Mohi Bharam Bholaanee ||

The self-willed manmukhs are deluded by doubt and attachment.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਉਰਾਣੀ ॥੫॥

Bin Naavai Sabh Firai Bouraanee ||5||

Without the Name, everyone wanders around insane. ||5||

ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਮਹਿ ਏਕਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

Theen Bhavan Mehi Eaekaa Maaeiaa ||

Throughout the three worlds, is the one Maya.

ਮੂਰਖਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥

Moorakh Parr Parr Dhoojaa Bhaao Dhrirraaeiaa ||

The fool reads and reads, but holds tight to duality.

ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥

Bahu Karam Kamaavai Dhukh Sabaaeiaa ||

He performs all sorts of rituals, but still suffers terrible pain.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥

Sathigur Saev Sadhaa Sukh Paaeiaa ||6||

Serving the True Guru, eternal peace is obtained. ||6||

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

Anmrith Meethaa Sabadh Veechaar ||

Reflective meditation upon the Shabad is such sweet nectar.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭੋਗੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥

Anadhin Bhogae Houmai Maar ||

Night and day, one enjoys it, subduing his ego.

ਸਹਜਿ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

Sehaj Anandh Kirapaa Dhhaar ||

When the Lord showers His Mercy, we enjoy celestial bliss.

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੭॥

Naam Rathae Sadhaa Sach Piaar ||7||

Imbued with the Naam, love the True Lord forever. ||7||

ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

Meditate on the Lord, and read and reflect upon the Guru's Shabad.

ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥

Har Jap Parreeai Houmai Maar ||

Subdue your ego and meditate on the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਭਇ ਸਚਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

Har Japeeai Bhae Sach Piaar ||

Meditate on the Lord, and be imbued with fear and love of the True One.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੩॥੨੫॥
